How to break free?

How to find joy? How to be enlightened?

Dive deep into the source. Spoil alert: courage and determination needed.

The first thing everyone on this planet should understand, according to Sadhguru…

“Fundamentally, people need to understand the source of human experience is within.

Joy or misery, agony or ecstasy, everything comes from within you.

Suppose right now. I think I am miserable because of you. There’s no solution for my life, isn’t it? Because all you have to do is talk in front of my home. I will become miserable. So simple it is. You don’t have to kill me. You just have to walk around in front of me. I will die within myself every day.

If I understand the source of my joy and misery is within me. Then you know, what’s the obvious choice?”

What’s the takeaway?

You might not be responsible for what happens to you, but you are responsible for what happens inside of you. You do have 100% of the control over how you respond.

The key is to recognize that there is a space between a stimulus and your response.

What happens in that space? We do not only respond with actions. Far before the behavioral response, there is an emotional response and before that a choice of perspective.

Your inner self-talk determines your outlook, and your outlook determines how you feel about the stimulus, and how you feel determines your action in response.

If the chain reaction is autonomous and you have never doubt there’re other possibilities, your response is called a reaction, which diminishes the precious space of free will that only humans can cultivate. That means you are not in the driver's seat, and the autonomous reaction has got the better of you this time. So, be more alert by choice, you will notice patterns of yours and find better angles for it.

Next Steps?

Here’s an actionable three steps, in a form of self-talk, to work towards your inner freedom. The overall goal is to identify and break the autonomous reaction that is uniquely yours and probably has become a habit, or a pattern.

1. Set a trigger:

“When I feel mad, sad, or in any way uncomfortable, I will trigger myself to STOP, and move to step 2”.

2. Understand the source:

“What was the inner talk? How did I look at the situation? What was my perspective on this which cause the misery?”

3. Try new perspectives:

“If this perspective has caused me so much distress, can’t I find another way to look at it? Since I live to enjoy life, not to make it miserable, I will do my best to try an angle that works better for me. So come on, what is it?”
